木聚糖是高度复杂的多糖大族，在植物细胞壁（硬木桦木，如落叶松）和部分藻类中发现。木聚糖，存在于植物细胞壁中丰富的纤维素，具有线性骨架结构组成，β-D-木糖残基(1-4)相连。根据其来源，可能含有乙酰L-阿拉伯呋喃糖，乙酰，D-葡萄糖醛酸和4-o-甲基葡萄糖醛酸残基。

木聚糖是以下藻类细胞壁的组成成分：
1）部分绿藻 (主要为 macrophytic siphonous genera, 类似 Codium, Caulerpa 或 Bryopsis Genus). 线性骨架结构的主体是β-D-(1-3)-木糖糖链。
2）部分赤藻 (Nemaliales和Palmariales)。据其来源不同，可能由β(1-3)和/或β(1-4)-木糖残基构成，另外可能含有半乳吡喃糖基、糖醛酸、硫酸化和磷酸化残基。
